Service Description

This class combines collage and painting to create a layered design on a gourd. A woven rim that complements the final design finishes the gourd. This class is based on a class taught by Glenda Goodrich with the substrate being a flat surface. I modified this process for a gourd as the substrate. Special techniques include the collage itself which combines things like colorful papers, old sheet music, stamps (or color copies of anything), maps, etc. I have used sheet music, stamps, photos of special things/people, poetry, etc. Stenciling a design on the collage and then painting around the drawn stencil highlights the stencil design but still allows the underlying collage to show through. List of Tools and Additional Materials Students will Need for the Class: Various papers for collage including dark, medium and light tones: handmade and scrapbook papers, old sheet music, maps, color/b&w copies of photos, special printed text, etc. (I will bring my collection of papers.) Acyrlic paint in a color that you like. (I will also bring paints.) Stencils that can be easily traced around (or create your own). (I will bring stencils that I own.) Matte or gloss medium will be provided. Small old brushes for spreading the matte or gloss medium. Heat gun or hair dryer (I have 3 that I will bring). Brushes for painting including one wide (1” or so), one smaller and one very small brush. Scissors I will bring permanent pencils and pens for the participants. Baby wipes. Apron Type of gourd and size: The gourd should be big enough to easily draw your stenciled design.
